Hello members of the forum...

My name is Mike Wheeler. I am a prospective member. I spoke with Dan Devine today, and I will be attending the June meeting and submitting a membership application. I am very excited at the opportunity to fish with your club! A little info about me - I am the Head Golf Pro at the Manor Golf Club and I manage the day to day operations as well as run my own golf instruction business. My only hobby besides playing golf is fishing. I do not own a boat (YET), so now I just fish off of the shore at Lake Ontelaunee.

Now to the question... I am from Maryland, and I saw that the FLW has a tournament on the Potomac not too far away from where I grew up in Baltimore. I just registered today as a competitive member, and I was hoping to fish it. As I'm sure all of you know, I need a guaranteed boater in order to compete. I posted on the FLW Tour's forum, and Dan told me about this forum to see if anyone of you were interested in fishing. Obviously, all expenses would be shared as expected. I was planning on staying at a nearby hotel, and that would be shared as well. I have some nice perks as a PGA apprentice, so I may be able to get some great rates as well for the Friday night stay.

If anyone is planning on going down, it is June 2nd. Give me a call if you were thinking about it and maybe we can get together and fish in the meantime. My cell is 443-841-5438 and my email is mwheeler63@pga.com. Thanks and I am looking forward to meeting everyone in a few weeks at the June meeting!

Mike

April 1st & Oct 21 were missing. Just spoke with him via phone and he informed me all permits were approved and we could hold tournament April 1st even if hard copy permit doesn't arrive. One flaw... they approved it for Dry Brooks (both Corp & Fish Commission). I did submit for State Hill. We have to conduct tournament at Dry Brook Ramp now. Let's get the word out to as many individuals as possible.
Cleon is bringing donuts & coffee (thanks).

As the forum gets busier you may want to limit or turn off all those email notifications you receive when someone posts a message. You may just want to check in from time to time and see what is going on rather than receive those notifications. To do this you need to sign in to the forum, at the top of the screen to the right of the "Berks Bassmasters Logo" you will see your username. Click on your username and a preference screen will open. On the left side of that screen you will see a menu item called "My Preferences" . There you can turn off and on different email notifications. Also in that menu you will see "Email Subscriptions". There you can unsubscribe from receiving emails from the different forum topics. Play around with those settings, turn them all off or all on, whatever you find meets your needs. Even though those "notification emails" are addressed from me they are auto generated by the forum software in accordance to how you have your preferences set. I can not change these for you since there is no way for me to find your password. All a part of security so nobody can sign into your account but the account holder himself. While in the preferences screen you can change your picture or put in extra information about yourself. All kinds of things are available from that menu.

Hi. I'm a friend of Dan Devine and he told me to post my info about this trip here. I'm a member of Delaware Valley Bassmasters in Chester County. Last yr 10 of us spent a week on Lk. Champ. and it was so good that we are going back this year.

The week of 8/4-11/12. We have 4 rooms filled and need to fill 2 more or cancel them soon. We are penciled in for 6 rooms. This place sells out in Feb. so we hate to let the rooms go. One room will sleep 3 and the other 2....here is a link for Holiday Harbour where we will be staying on the lake in North Hero 10 miles south of Canada. http://holidayharborlodge.com/. The pricing is per bed....so for the week is around 265 each for the week. You can keep your boat in the water or pull it out each day they have a ramp there. This place is up in the islands area and is very protected from windy weather. For more info about this trip please contact me @ contact info below. If you like brown bass fishing this is one hell of a trip most of the smallies were in the 3 lb range....several big lg-mouth were caught too including a 6 lber.....we had 5 boats last yr and ave. 30 to 50 fish a day........thanks...JS

Jerry Stump
crankbass@aol.com

The EPA Denies a Petition to Restrict Lead Tackle

Science has prevailed. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has denied a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD)—an anti-sportsmen group—that would have precipitated significant restrictions on lead fishing tackle all over the United States. The CBD wanted the EPA to use the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to heavily regulate anglers from using tackle they have long used even though science doesn’t support such a measure. The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) has been, and will continue to, fight such unscientific lead bans and restrictions at the state and federal level.

In a letter to the CBD on February 14, 2012 the EPA wrote:

After careful review, EPA has determined that, while the petition does provide evidence of exposure and a risk to waterfowl in some areas of the United States, it does not provide a basis for finding that the risk presented is an unreasonable risk for which federal action under section 6(a) of TSCA is necessary to adequately protect against such risks. Accordingly, EPA is denying your request to initiate a proceeding for the issuance of a rulemaking under Section 6(a) of TSCA to adequately protect against risks posed by fishing tackle containing lead of various sizes and uses that are ingested by wildlife…. Your petition does not demonstrate why federal action is necessary given the mix of regulatory and education actions state agencies and the Federal Government already are taking to address the impact of lead fishing tackle on local environments.”

When the CBD began its quest for this unwarranted restriction on fishing tackle in 2010, the CSF responded by working with the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) in Washington, D.C., and with the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses (NASC), which serves as the umbrella organization for launching and working with state legislative sportsmen’s caucuses now active in 39 state legislatures, to demand such regulations should be based on sound science and under state jurisdictions. The Executive Council for the NASC, and several state legislative sportsmen’s caucuses, wrote letters to
EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson asking that she deny the CBD petition. Meanwhile, the CSF rallied legislators in the CSC and in caucuses around the country to demand that any such ban be based on real scientific evidence; after all, the cost to anglers would be real if affordable tackle is taken off the shelves. The EPA subsequently denied the CBD’s first petition.

However, the CBD filed a new petition with the EPA in November of 2011. This petition asked the EPA to evaluate the unreasonable risk of injury from lead fishing tackle, and to begin proceedings for rule making under Section 6 of TSCA. The CSF stayed engaged at all levels of government. The NASC sent letters from various state sportsmen’s caucuses, including Alaska, Arkansas, Indiana, Oregon and South Carolina, to point out that state natural resource agencies are in a better position to respond to any localized concerns and that such a restriction is not biologically justified as no studies have shown that fishing tackle is impacting loon or other waterfowl populations.

Also, on April 14, 2011, the Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Sports Protection Act (S. 838 and H.R. 1558) was introduced into both chambers of Congress by the chairs of the CSC—Senators Jon Tester (D-MT) and John Thune (R-SD) and Representatives Jeff Miller (R-FL) and Mike Ross (D-AR). This legislation is another way the CSF has been working to prevent a federal ban on lead in recreational fishing tackle. It would clarify the TSCA exemption for ammunition and establish a similar exemption for fishing tackle. The Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Sports Protection Act would put an end to attempts to over-regulate the recreational fishing and hunting industries and protect the rights of anglers and hunters who choose to sustainably enjoy their sports.

Jeff Crane, president of the CSF, says, “Sportsmen and wildlife won a big battle. Though we doubt the Center for Biological Diversity will stop this ideological attack on fishing, the EPA has decided against an unscientific restriction of lead fishing tackle. The state legislative sportsmen’s caucuses, under the umbrella of the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses, have once again represented their angling constituents admirably.”

If the EPA agreed to this ban it would have been an unjustified fishing restriction at the federal level. Wildlife management in the United States has been a model to the rest of the world because we have successfully managed wildlife at the population level. There is no evidence that lead fishing tackle is causing negative population-level impacts, therefore forcing anglers to replace their lead tackle with costly alternatives would be an unnecessary burden to America’s fishermen and an impediment to fishing participation.

Other sportsmen’s groups, most notably the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), have also been instrumental in fighting back these unnecessary restrictions on America’s anglers right to fish.
Here is some info on the new rig some have commented on recently...

Reminder to Fishermen on the Use of 'Alabama Rigs'

12/16/2011 | Posted by dcosden
Tags: recreational
The Department has recently received many questions about a type of gear called an Alabama Rig. The Department defines the Alabama Rig as an umbrella rig. The umbrella rig, as described on page 39 of the 2012 Fishing Guide, may not have more than two baits or lures which have hooks. Additional hooks can be removed to bring the rig into compliance with regulations. This is consistent with regulations for the mainstem tidal Potomac River as well, which is managed under the authority of the Potomac River Fisheries Commission.
Related Information
•Maryland Fisheries Regulations Online
•Maryland Fishing Guide
