The Department defines the Alabama Rig as an umbrella rig. The umbrella rig, as described on page 39 of the 2012 Fishing Guide, may not have more than two baits or lures which have hooks. Additional hooks can be removed to bring the rig into compliance with regulations. This is consistent with regulations for the mainstem tidal Potomac River as well, which is managed under the authority of the Potomac River Fisheries Commission.
Related Information
•Maryland Fisheries Regulations Online
•Maryland Fishing Guide

Via Tim McNicholas as follows:

Just got this off of Kens page.

> Unless you have had your head in the sand as it concerns
> Chesapeake Bay menhaden populations (the most important food
> source for most Bay inhabitants,) A PRFC Finfish Adviser
> publicly stated (at Atlantic States Marine Fisheries
> Commission meeting held at the Potomac River Fisheries
> Commission offices) that it’s the catfish and
> largemouth
> bass from the upper tidal bass that is causing menhaden
> decline—not the Omega Company that nets millions of
> pounds
> at the mouth of the bay. Wow! The name of the gentleman is
> Robert T. Brown, representing Maryland Watermen’> thats
> Association and St. Mary’s Watermen. He also suggests

> the PRFC remove all protections from bass and catfish to
> alleviate the “problem” and wants the Potomac
> River
> Fisheries Commission to “charge a fee” for
> tournaments
> held on the Potomac. Robert T. Brown is the Chairman of the
> PRFC Finfish Advisory Board. By the way, this is the same
> Robert T. Brown that was arrested and
> convicted of illegally catching and selling some 80,000
> pounds of largemouth bass from the Potomac in 1995. As
> absurd an idea as can be—this man has clout at PRFC
> and
> one must wonder how a convicted resource violator can serve
> any interest other than his.

From Joseph Love via Dan Devine:

Hi everyone,

In the midst of recent reports of northern snakehead captures from throughout the Nanticoke River, Rhode River, and ponds near the upper Patuxent and Potomac Rivers, we have put together a video that shows folks how to identify and legally kill a northern snakehead. I’ve pasted the links below. The first link takes folks to the MDDNR page where the video is posted. The second link takes folks to the youtube page where the video is posted. The video will soon be posted on the tidal bass website. Please feel free to share this video with friends, family, and those among you who spend time on the water.

We are very serious about preventing the spread of this species beyond the Potomac River. While we are implementing measures to control and kill this fish from outside the Potomac River drainage, we are asking anglers who spend a lot of time out on the water to help us out. There are a lot of misidentifications and some confirmed sightings go unreported for a long while. Also, some anglers still illegally transport live snakehead, even though the angler may not know the snakehead is alive. I don’t want anyone getting fined for carrying around a live snakehead. I also don’t want anyone stocking ponds with live snakehead. Our hope is that the short video we’ve put together will show folks: 1) how to identify the snakehead; 2) how to kill the snakehead; and 3) how to report the snakehead to state and federal agencies. Thanks for watching, Joe.

http://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/news/story.asp?story_id=195

or

Joseph W.

Via Joseph Love

Hi everyone, I have some important news regarding Chopawamsic Creek of the Potomac River and restricted areas to anglers. Please read Don Cosden’s email below and the attached poster. Mary Groves (Southern Region Manager) has been asked to print up some of these posters, laminate them, and place them at popular docks of Potomac River.

From Don Cosden (Assistant Director of Fisheries Service): Anglers should be aware of recent restricted access to waters in and around the Marine Corps Air Facility at Quantico, VA. The attached document provides a map showing the area and explains the new restrictions now in place. I met with managers and legal staff from the Base on Wednesday, April 13 along with AC Carpenter (Director PRFC), Gary Martel (Fisheries Director, VDGIF), John Odenkirk (Regional Biologist, VDGIF). We discussed the reasons for the new restrictions and large area affected as well as possible exemptions. Ongoing security concerns and recent changes to airfield infrastructure were given as the two main factors prompting these new restrictions. No exemptions beyond those listed on the attached document are being considered at this time.

Joseph W.
I spoke to Judy today at the Potomac River Fisheries department and clarified some things on their involvement with the NOAA registration. If (as many of our members have) you have bought a Boat Sport Fishing Sticker from the Potomac River Fisheries then THE BOATER is automatically signed up for the NOAA requirement. If anyone fishes with you on your boat they are required to have the NOAA registration number with them if stopped by a marine enforcement officer. The 800 telephone number on the back of your bost license is manned 24/7 so they rider can call the number and register right from the boat on the day they are fishing if they are not signed up. There is presently no charge for the the registration. Also, this year, if you are fishing the Delaware River in PA you are not required to register as long as you have a current PA fishing license.

That is the information I got today, who knows about tomorrow.

Dan
